Why, hello, blogging world! I was just thinking the other day about how long it had been since I had written a post. Holy cow, almost a year! That's sad. But I'm back! So here we go...
30. I haven't been able to say that number within the last 11 months. Last October as I turned 29, I realized I had 1 year left in my twenties until the dreaded th---- th---- th---- I haven't even been able to say the word. But as it's approaching closer and closer, maybe I'm getting a little more mature about it or accepting or thankful. While talking with friends yesterday, I said (with a sniffle and whine) "Tomorrow is September 1, which means that October comes next, which means that on September 11 I'm going to start getting really sad because it's only a month away." I've been thinking this through.
Why is 30 so hard? Why is this step-into-a-new-decade so bothersome to me? I'm blessed! I have a job that I think I'm pretty good at, I have a loving and supportive family, I have amazing friends, I stay active and do fun things, God loves me! I mean, seriously, not a bad deal at all. So why all the anxiety and sadness about this birthday? I guess it's because my life is not where I imagined it would be at 30. The LeAnn Rimes song "Something's Gotta Give" comes to mind: "She thought by now she'd have a man, 2 car seats and a minivan, but it still ain't here." :) (Gotta get a country music reference in there.) So, yes, my this-is-how-my-life-will-be-at-30 fantasy is not true, but I truly know and accept deep in my heart that it's ok. My plan is not the same as my other late-20/early-30 something friends, but that's ok. It's ok to be different. In fact it's more than ok, because my life, my plan, my purpose is not the same as anyone else's. God's purpose and plan in my life required/s a different path and I am happy and hopeful about that.
So it's September 1 and this birthday milestone is 1 month and 10 days away. Why am I posting about it already? Because I have a plan and I want others to join me in this plan. I'm calling it 30until30. Starting September 11, I will have 30 days until my 30th birthday and I want to live out these last 30 days of this decade in a meaningful, encouraging way. I am looking for ways to serve, love, encourage, lift-up, inspire, help, show kindness, and most importantly, show Jesus to others.
Do you want to join this journey with me? I would love for my friends and family and any random blogging world strangers to join along. Any act of kindness or service that you do from September 11-October 11, I want to hear about! I planned my first act of service this morning for Wednesday, October 2 from 7:00-8:30 at Southland's Harrodsburg campus. I will be packing meals for Haiti. Want to join me? Sign up here: http://southlandchristian.org/mealpacking/ and let me know if you can help out and pack meals with me.
30until30. Here we go!
